She asked me “when is a good time to start thinking about freezing my eggs”. I sat across from her in the clinic room and stared back. What a question. And what ironic timing.
I thought to myself, “if only she knew”. If only she knew that we are about the same age. That just this morning I took my cocktail of egg boosting supplements. That there’s a birth control packet waiting for me to take today’s pill suppressing ovulation. She has no idea that I’m literally 1 week away from starting my stimulation injections. That in a couple weeks a (hopefully) huge number of eggs will be sucked out and frozen. If she only knew.
I counseled her extensively on female age related decline in egg quality as well as the upsides and downsides of egg freezing. I recommended that she seriously consider it and research well. I offered her a referral to REI.
I’ve counseled many women, both patients and friends, about egg freezing. It’s really a personal decision that takes soul searching and forward thinking. It’s not the right choice for all women and it doesn’t gaurantee you a baby in the future. But it is something to think about. It’s something I thought about and chose to do.
Have you done egg or embryo freezing? When is the right time?
